The Death March*

Meet Peeah.

This is my oldest sister. She is five years older than me, and we’re quite a bit alike in many ways. We both share a deep hearting of shoes and all things pink (and black). Like all members of my family, she has a great sense of humor–but every once in a while she struggles to see the humor of something… like the story I’m about to tell you. She wasn’t very happy with me. haha!

About a year ago I went to spend a few days with my family. I often leave a few days ahead of the Hubster so that I can get a good visit in as he can only be there for 2-3 days (he’s allergic to MY cat–my Dad pretends she’s his). So I probably arrived on the Monday or Tuesday, and he likely followed me on Friday.

We like to leave early when we travel so we can get the max time out of our visits. The morning that the Hubster came to visit he woke up really early to travel (he missed me). He set his alarm for shortly after 5am so make sure that he could be up and ready to make a 7:45am bus.

Now then. I have an alarm clock. I’ve had the same alarm clock since I was 10 years old. My grade 5 teacher gave it to me–with my name inscribed on the bottom–and I have ALWAYS used it. It’s nothing exciting, but it gets the job done. The Hubs, however, prefers to set the alarm on his cell phone because if the power goes out than he will still be able to wake up on time. We live in a weirdo building and that happens a lot.

So. The Hubs wakes up to a cell phone. I don’t mind it. He doesn’t ever use those shrill or annoying ringers so I can even sleep through it because I’m used to hearing it. Instead he uploads custom ringers of music he loves as it’s more likely to get him out of bed, and really, it’s just WAY more fun.

At this point in time, the Hubster had a song from Pirates of the Caribbean 2 as his cell phone ringer. He is a die-hard Pirates lover (at least for the first film) and we both LOVE this song. It’s called The Kraken and it is just AWESOME. When you hear it, you’ll understand why. It’s dark and menacing and just so so powerful. It’s full of loud organ music and it gives me goose bumps when I hear it. It’s kind of like a menacing pirate death march.

Let’s recap so far. The Hubs wakes up to a cell phone. On this cell phone is a dark, menacing organ-themed ringer. The alarm on this cell phone with the dark, menacing organ-themed ringer is set for 5am. Also let’s remember that cell phones are portable and are often set down and forgotten in random places.

SO. The Hubster joined me in Btown and a bunch of my family came up as well. I have 5 siblings and my parents have a medium-sized home, but it’s not big enough to house all of us when we come to play. People end up sleeping everywhere–including the living room. Before we all go to sleep my family loves to hang out and visit in this living room. We all throw our things everywhere; keys on tables, cell phones on couches, purses and bags everywhere. And then we worry about cleaning in the morning.

This particular visit Peeah was the lucky duck that got to sleep in the living room on a big blowup air mattress. Of all my siblings, she loves to go to bed the earliest. Like me (and I think Spart) she is a TOTAL morning person. Peeah is verrrrry particular about her sleep. She can sleep through almost anything when she’s out, but she likes it quiet when she’s trying to fall asleep. So on this night she went to bed in the living room so we all filtered out.

Now I did say that Peeah could sleep through almost anything. Remember how I said my family loved to leave their things all over the living room? When we went to bed the Hubs forgot his cell phone in the living room. The cell phone with the dark, menacing organ-themed ringer set to go off at 5am.

At 6:15 the following morning I woke up to hear a bit of a commotion. And then I heard slow, angry stomping up the stairs to the tune of The Kraken, followed with:

“WHOSE. PHONE. IS. THIS?!?”

I flew out of bed and ran to the bedroom door–trying not to wake up the Hubster. I opened the door a crack, and with a big smile on my face, I said:

“Mine! Thanks!” :)

She slammed the phone into my palm and said,

“Your death march phone has been playing since 5am.”

…and looked like she was ready to kill me. She then proceeded to tell me that (as scheduled) the phone had begun to ring at 5am… and continued to ring every 5 minutes onward. At first the dark, menacing music incorporated into a scary dream, which woke her up. And then when she realized what it was, she woke up again and couldn’t fall back asleep. In her half-asleep mindset she couldn’t figure out where the phone was for over an hour. When she did find the phone, she couldn’t figure out how to turn off the music, which led to her own death march stomp up the stairs. I knew that we were in hot water, so I became the sweet little sister that I am and apologized for like 15 minutes until she went to pass out on my mother’s bed.

After I was sure that she was asleep and wouldn’t hurt me I couldn’t help but burst out laughing… or ALL the phones in our house to go off it was the Hubster’s death march. At 5am. On a Saturday. For Peeah.

The End. haha

P.s. You MUST listen to the song if you haven’t head it. I’ve even found it for you!! The part on The Hubster’s phone is roughly at 6:12. You will love.

Undergrad = COMPLETE*

Sooooo…… you know who is no longer an undergraduate student? GUESS.

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yesterday, April 19th, at 4:03pm I handed in my last undergraduate exam ever and completed my degree. I cannot even describe the euphoria I felt as I walked out of the athletics complex (where the exams were held) and out into the beautiful, beautiful sunshine knowing that I never ever ever have to write a 38 page essay again. *swoon*

It still hasn’t completed sunk in that there is nothing left to do, but I cannot wait for that feeling. I’m hoping it will come tomorrow after I leave work and don’t have to go to class, or do readings, or go to my other job, or write papers, or study. When I can do whatever I want after work… like go buy groceries, go for a walk, go shopping, read a real book, or just do nothing. Nothing nothing nothing. :) Iiiiiiiiiiii like it.

DONE!

Chapter Thirteen* Be Mine?

I know that some of you have been patiently waiting a WHOLE WEEK for the next chapter of our story, and I’m so sorry that’s been such a big gap. I can attest that this week has been really busy for me and my new project is eating up a bunch of my free time! But without further ado…

…this is the story of how the Hubster and I met, fell in love and got married within 8 months…

…and lived happily ever after*

The next week together flew by. The night after I wrote my ‘classic journal entry‘ (as the Hubs calls it) he came out to visit me late after work. Things were now better than ever… it became harder and harder to say good bye each time he left, and we kept making excuses to see each other as often as we could. We were a little limited in that I didn’t have a car and he was working crazy hours at his job. We often had what we called “Midnight Visits” after he finished work, and even if we could only be together for an hour or two it was completely worth it. :)

Our next “date” has always been one of my favourites. As I had never been to IKEA before, he decided it might be fun to go look around without thinking about how someone else could misconstrue our little outing. You know… furniture shopping together can appear as though you’re pretty serious with each other. In all honesty, I don’t even know if we had had a “DTR Moment” at that point in time, we just loved being together.

Anyway… so he picked me up and drove me to IKEA and we planned our future house(s). haha! By no means were we talking about getting married / moving in together (yet) but it was fun to talk about what we’d love to have in a house. We wandered around the store forever… trying out living room sets, kitchen appliances, etc etc. It was glorious.

This visit spawned many more Ikea trips, usually with Too Kool and Erock. They always took fun pictures. I shall share:

Erock and the Hubster decided it was time to eat.

Then the Hubster needed to use the restroom.

…and then he got tired.

Austin Powers, anyone?
HUBBLE HUBBLE DING DING!

Too Kool demonstrating “Le Tigre”

Who knew that IKEA could be so fun?

I was going to write about our first Valentine’s Day together in this post (hence the title)… but I think I’ll wait. :) And just for the record, the “I Love You” post is so close I can TASTE it. Be excited.

Quick Update*

I’m sorry I haven’t been updating every day–it’s been a really busy couple of days! I’ve been studying for my last exam tomorrow (SO EXCITED) and working as well. This week was my last week for my job at the university, but I’ll continue teaching for another couple of weeks. I’m also still on the hunt for a summer job. *sigh*

However, I’ve also been working on a project that I’ve wanted to do all year and only just now have had a bit of time to devote to it. I hope to have it completed to share with all of you within the next few days–I promise I’ll let you know!

Other than that, life has been good. I’m going home next Tuesday to see my family for the first time in 4 months and I am SO excited. This is the longest that I have ever been away and I miss them terribly! And tonight, for really the first time in 3 years, I went out to a lounge with some friends to hang out. My favourite professor ever was there with her 4th year class and I decided to crash it and I am SO glad that I did! It was an absolute riot… seriously. She’s incredible. She is one of the only things I will miss about Hippie U (aside from all my friends, of course).

Anyway, I should probably get back to the books… I haven’t done much of anything tonight. We had some Chinese food for dinner that has not been sitting well with me so I was kind of taking it easy after getting home. But now it’s time. *sigh*

ONE MORE SLEEP UNTIL I FINISH UNIVERSITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Llama Theory*

I had a number of people ask me about what a “3 llama day” was, as I claimed Monday to be one. So let me explain the llama theory to you… it’s really quite lovely.

Almost two years ago, someone I know once explained it to me and ever since I’ve become absolutely addicted. You see, in my little city full of senior citizens we also have a quaint little zoo. It’s not a full-sized super exciting zoo like they have in the city, but it’s cute, and absolutely free. Inside there are monkeys, camels, donkeys, otters, buffalo, and among other things, llamas.

I’ve never found them to be particularly attractive animals, I actually think that they are kind of funny looking. However, I developed a deep love for them after watching Napoleon Dynamite (TINA! COME GET SOME HAM!) and watch for them at every zoo I see.

Anyway. My university campus is quite a ways from downtown so I have about a 20 minute bus ride out. On this bus ride I get to pass the zoo which has some animal habitats visible from the road. I can see part of the camel space, the wild goats, the buffalo and… the llamas.

Now this friend of mine once explained to me that she can usually judge what kind of day she is going to have by what she sees in the llama habitat. As the bus drives by she always looks to see how many llamas are out and about and judges what her day will be like from there. These are the ratings:

0 llamas: Pretty much the worst day possible. It will probably be cold, wet, and just bad. Bad bad bad.
1 llama: An ok day. Don’t expect anything spectacular, but it won’t be terrible. It will also likely be an cool, overcast day.
2 llamas: This will be a pretty good day. Something fun might happen, you’ll be in a great mood and it’s probably sunny with cloudy breaks outside.
3 llamas: This is the BEST day. It’s probably warm and beautifully sunny out. Birds sing, bus drivers smile, and people may spontaneously burst into song and dance. Something great is bound to happen, as it should. After all, you just saw three llamas!

So now I can’t help it. Every day as I pass by the zoo I subconsciously watch for the llamas… and sure enough, the llama theory almost ALWAYS right. Like on Monday when I had my great day–three llamas. On most of my bad days this year, there were 0 to 1 llamas present. I’m telling you, they must be magical llamas.
