Daylight Savings Crime*

I have officially fallen off the bandwagon. I have missed posting two days this month. *hangs head in shame*

I have decided to blame it on daylight savings time. After all, something needs to be at fault for that, and it couldn’t possibly be me. Nope. No way, hosée. Somehow this pushing forward of time has affected my whole daytime pattern and I no like it.

On some basic level I understand the concept of the “springing forward”, but I haaaaaate losing the light in the morning. I’d much rather keep my sunshine at 7am and enjoy the dusk at 6pm. Last week it was sooo nice having daylight shine through my windows as I got myself ready for school in the wee hours of the morning. As the Hubs doesn’t need to be up as early as I do, I do my best to tip toe around in the dark so I won’t wake him up. (What a good wife I am…) As it was light outside, I could finally see what clothes I was selecting out of my closet and make a matching outfit on the first try. As of Sunday morning, I went back to black–pitch black that is. It’s brutal… it’s so much harder waking up when it still feels like night outside. *sigh*

Daylight savings time stole my sunshine, and I want it back. Right now.

Now here is the funny part: the clocks changed at 2am on Sunday morning. I, being an avid CBC reader read the article reminding everyone to change their clocks, so I was able to make a note to change everything before we went to bed.

Apparently not everyone got the memo.

After losing an hour of sleep, the Hubster and I sleepily got ready for church. We were a bit late that day and got to the chapel with only five minutes before the meeting was to start… BUT, we were awake and on time. When we pulled into the parking lot I was surprised to see very few cars there. As it was the weekend before March Break (aka– prime vacation time as it’s cheaper than the break) I assumed that several families must be off on vacation.

Our little ward is small to being with, but when we walked into the chapel there were maaaybe 30 people there, and notably absent were all the assigned speakers for sacrament meeting. haha! The Bishop looked a bit concerned and waited a few minutes before starting the meeting. As he rose and walked to the pulpit I waited with anticipation to see how he’d handle the situation. I found it rather humorous–when does it ever happen that all three assigned speakers just don’t show up??? haha!! And then I remembered that our Bishop likes to call people at random to fill empty time or to say prayers… and I slowly (and definitely not elegantly) slid lower and lower into the bench avoiding all trace of eye contact. (Side note: the sliding down definitely increased the uniboob effect, in case you were wondering) I don’t mind speaking–when I am prepared and have been given sufficient notice. I’m not into the whole “SURPRISE! You’re speaking for 20 minutes!!” approach.

Anyway, people slowly started trickling in as the opening hymn was being sung, and after the sacrament was passed a flood of people who had oh, so obviously missed the daylight savings time memo tried to sneak in the back. Unfortunately, when it is a herd of people quiet doesn’t really happen. haha! Luckily one of the speakers was in the herd and slipped up to the front, so there were only two spots to fill. As the Bishop approached the pulpit I peeked to see if the rest of the ward was madly avoiding eye contact like I was. Apparently this was the case as it was so obvious he cracked a joke about it and picked on his son and son-in-law to fill the time instead. Phewf.

The moral of the story is daylight savings time causes chaos at church and makes me cranky. Isn’t that reason enough to end it here and now?

Inspiration*

Some days I am so full of inspiration for a great blog idea I can barely wait to get to my little laptop and start writing.

But then there are also those days, like tonight, when my brain is as blank as the little white box I’m supposed to start typing in. I’ve been waiting here for nearly an hour waiting for some divine intervention to deliver me a fabulous blog post… and…

…nope.

So, here is my question–to all you wonderful bloggers out there (whose blogs I looove to read): where do you find your inspiration for each post? And, if you’ve been reading for a while, what would you enjoy reading about / me writing about?

The Uniboob*

The origin of this concept actually goes all the way back to grade 10; way back to my good friend Kyddo* and her grey zip up sweater.

One particularly cold day in grade 10 when our old school was more drafty than usual, Kyddo decided to zip her sweater all the way up–past the traditional half-zip, all the way up to her chin. As she slowly warmed up she glanced down at her chest only to realize there was something not quite right with the zipper on her sweater. The zipper curved out, leaving an enormous bulge on her chest… creating the appearance of “The Uniboob“. The zipper somehow made it look like she had only one giant breast, instead of the regular normal-sized two. We laughed about it for ages when we first discovered it, and then I completely forgot about it.

…until today.

When I woke up this morning, I checked the weather forecast before getting dressed. I was dismayed to see a “winter storm watch” flashing, so I decided I should dress warmly, just in case. I threw on my black skirt and boots with a white top, then grabbed a grey zip up sweater as I ran out the door for church.

I found the building a might chilly this morning, so as the Hubs and I sat in sacrament meeting I zipped up my grey sweater all the way to my chin to stay warm. The Hubs followed suit, and as he was sitting down his zipper bulged out making it look like he had an enormous pot belly. I began poking it (what good wife wouldn’t?) when the whole situation seemed extremely familiar. That is when I looked down at my chest and nearly laughed out loud in the middle of church.

I had a huge uniboob.

No matter how I adjusted the sweater, as long as it was zipped to my chin there was no ridding my chest of the massive uniboob now sitting there. I had two choices: stay warm and ignore the uniboob, or unzip and have two breasts again.

I opted for the uniboob. It’s good to be warm. :)

Do you own any uniboob shirts?

Bathing Suit Adventures*

I didn’t post yesterday. :(

I managed to post every day for over two months, but last night I was just too tired. I came home from school, had a two hour nap, woke up, had dinner and spent some time with the Hubs before we both passed out without meaning to. I woke up at 4am with all the lights still on, make-up still on and I was not in my jammies. I sleepily closed everything down, brushed my teeth and climbed back into bed and slept until 9am. In total I slept nearly 12 hours, and here it is, 9pm, and I’m already ready for bed again. haha! It’s March break in 7 sleeps (the Ontario version of Spring Break) and I can’t wait for a whole week of no marking, planning, teaching, duty-ing or not sleeping. Oh, how glorious it will be! I have some secret / not-so-secret plans for the week that I shall reveal to you soonish.

I have decided that I have a love / hate relationships with Saturdays. I love them because it’s a day “off”, but then at the same time they are usually so busy to it’s not really a day off at all. haha!

Today we woke up and got our day started around 9am (a glorious 3 hours later than usual… heaven) and decided to do some shopping. At the last minute I decided to grab umbrellas as we headed out the door, as the forecast said there was a possibility of light rain later that afternoon. As it turns out, I am brilliant. More on this later.

Our first stop was Winners. We have had a gift card for a couple of months that I wanted to use, and I also needed a new bathing suit as I want to start taking an aqua fit class with Karog at le gym! I was sorely disappointed with their lack of selection in first, bathing suits, second, bathing suit cover ups, and third, shoes. *sigh* We decided to wander over to the mall as it was only a couple of blocks away.

As we walked the Hubs decided to pop into Zellars as we hadn’t been in ours in years and he was browsing for a new toy he wanted. He went in to price out a Nintendo DS, and ended up enamoured with a great deal on those mini PSPs. After hemming and hawing a bit he decided to leave it and price it out at other stores. Done.

So we strolled over to the mall. It wasn’t quite as warm as we thought, but it wasn’t raining or snowing and it was still above 0°C so we couldn’t reeeeally complain… could we? (Maybe just a little bit… it WAS 14°C yesterday! Why did it have to chaaaange?)

I continued the bathing suit hunt in old Navy having spied a brown one I semi-liked a few weeks back. I tried on a few, but still wasn’t loving anything. I have a new shopping policy (that the Hubs loves): unless I absolutely love something–which means not having it is not an option because I have decided that I need it–I don’t buy it. It’s actually worked out really well… I am now wearing all the clothes I own, and have very few heat-of-the-moment purchases that look FAB on the hanger at the store and somehow look completely different at home. (You know the ones I mean…)

I decided to try one more store at the mall: Sears. I remembered buying a bathing suit there a hundred years ago just before my 17th birthday (that I still have and LOVE) so I thought I’d give it a go. I actually found a brown one that was cute, but I didn’t love it for $80. I’m cheap–so sue me. Who wants to pay $80 for something that’s just going to get ruined in the hot tub anyway? haha

I decided to give up on the bathing suit adventure for awhile and continue on our errands. I had planned to stop at the tanning salon on the way, but as we got on the bus the heavens opened and out poured the rain. Now, this wasn’t just the light drizzle that was forecasted–I’m talking full-on torrential pouring rain here. We decided to bypass tanning and go straight to Walmart. I needed a few things, so I began checking things off my list when I found the cutest white flip flops that I love and I remembered that they had a bathing suit section.

The Hubs migrated over to the electronics section whilst I curiously walked over to the active wear section. It couldn’t hurt to look, right?

I was SO surprised–they had several really cute bathing suits that I really liked, and I ended up buying a super cute black one for $25! I made the Hubs come and give me his vote on the two I liked best and after being yelled by a Walmart lady for standing in the doorway of the change room. Good times.

I was so ready to get home by that point, as we had already been out for nearly 5 hours and had been all over town. As we stood huddled in the bus shelter my phone rang and I realized that I had made plans for a hot chocolate outing with a friend of mine who was in town this weekend. So I left the Hubster with all our bags and headed downtown for one last trip. We ended up chatting for over an hour in my favourite little downtown cafe before I dragged my tired little body back on the bus and headed home.

It was a lonnnng day… and despite being invited out to a teacher candidate outing tonight, I curled up on the couch with Meg & Tom (You’ve Got Mail) and slept on his lap. I had intended to do some marking, but I think I shall do some more sleeping instead. :)

Have a lovely evening!!

Bill Nye*

For the most part, I don’t enjoy lesson planning.

I love teaching, but I don’t like the prepping part. It’s long, boring and tedious and usually not fun. Usually.

I have been teaching a unit on climate in Geography–a subject I have not taken since I was in grade 9. It has been a big challenge for me as I am learning as I teach and most days I feel like I’m only staying about 5 minutes ahead of my kids. So, I have been leaning on external sources to increase my own knowledge and supplement my lessons.

Tonight I rediscovered Bill Nye… and fell in love all over again. Did you watch this show when you were a kid?? It was one of my favourites, and it is jam packed with glorious things for teaching!

So, I ended up really only watching countless clips from Bill Nye all night and I’m calling it “planning”. Today I like planning. :)

Here is a clip for your viewing pleasure–youtube also has a tonnn of episodes to watch (as I watched way too many tonight. haha!).

Were you a Bill Nye guy? (or girl… I just like to rhyme.)
